Will the DOI replace the URL?

Although it has been around for awhile, the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) has not yet caught on with most web hosters beyond the publishing industry. However, that is starting to change, notes Coretta Herod, managing member and creative director of Multimedia and Development LLC. If you use a web site to market your IP, you might want to consider some of the advantages a DOI has over a URL:

  • Unlike a URL, a DOI is permanent. When you update a DOI link or page, your information is updated through the DOI handler and all the links that are linked to the DOI (including web sites) are updated within 24 hours.
  • Think about the dead links that can lead your visitors to “error - page not found,” making them frustrated and turned off. There are no such things as dead links for a DOI.
  • A DOI is very search engine friendly. Search engines eat up DOIs, and “your search engine rankings will soar” using what Herod calls “the next generation URL.”

Sounds expensive, right? But Herod says you can get a DOI set up for about $35 a year. Go to: Internet Marketing Solutions
